Damien Hirst (b. 1965), born in Bristol, is a British conceptual artist and painter who entered the art world in the 1980s when living in London and receiving his Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from Goldsmiths College. During this period, he organized the successful ‘Freeze’ exhibition which included his own body of work along with fellow contemporaries; the success of this show caught the eye of many art institutions and figures, and is attributed to the beginning of the Young British Artist group which flourished in the 1990s. Since then, and winning the Turner Prize in 1995, Hirst’s career has grown exponentially to become one of the top international contemporary artists. His work centralizes themes of mortality, beauty, and technology, and religion. Hirst is known for his unconventional mediums to express these topics, including formaldehyde, ready made objects, and various painting techniques from realism to abstract spin painting. Hirst’s various unconventional projects have expressed struggle, tension, and curiosity into the human experience, attracting a captivated audience from across the globe. Damien Hirst has been featured in various prestigious institutions including the Tate Modern, the British Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rubell Collection in Miami, and Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples (2004) among others. He has also participated in various group and solo exhibitions across the world in galleries including the Gagosian and White Cube, in addition to various fairs including the Venice Biennale. Hirst has also opened his own Newport Street Gallery in London in 2015 to share his own collection to the public.
